Croeso Arberth

Croeso teams are working with Hiraeth Hope in West Wales to respond to the refugee crisis in a civilised sustainable way - with human faces, not beaurocracy . Hiraeth Hope is a member of Citizens Cymru/ Citizens UK, working with the Home Office.

Croeso Arberth's role is to prepare for, and to settle, 3 Syrian families into the area of Narberth in accordance with Pembrokeshire County Council and the Home Office initiative of Community Sponsorship.

The first family has now arrived, and they are settling in well after a very warm welcome from the community.  English language lessons have commenced, and the family is working hard to learn the language as fast as they can.

Lots of activities are being arranged to help the family fit into the local community, including 5-a-side football on a Sunday morning.

The group was established in June 2016 by local people coming together with an agreed aim. The aims are to settle families into the Narberth area, for them to be happy and gain their independence from the group as time goes on. Initially, at least for the first year, the group will support them physically, mentally, spiritually and financially to the best of the group’s ability.

The group held a cultural awareness day on Sunday 15th January, with speakers who informed about Syrian culture and way of life, as well as the realities within the refugee camps in Europe.  The attendees came away feeling much better informed as to how best to help the Syrian families settle and integrate into this country.

The group has now raised over £14,600, so has now achieved the £9000 total that they needed in order to participate in the Home Office scheme - enough for 3 adults.

Participants in the recent sponsored walk from Amroth to Saundersfoot and back, raised £337 towards our funds.  Well done everyone. See picture below.

Croeso Arberth and Croeso Abergwaun have, between them, secured a grant from the LEADER fund administered by PLANED.  The grant will help to provide interpreters and English language training to help us settle the family. Many thanks to PLANED, who administer the fund.

Previous events

Over £370 was raised by St Caradoc's church in Lawrenny during their Bluebell Weekend in mid-May.  All the proceeds from this event were donated to Croeso Arberth.  There were cream teas, children's activities and a Bluebell walk through Lawrenny Woods.  Jill Simpson gave a talk about Croeso Arberth.  A church service for all was held on Sunday.  Croeso Arberth are very grateful for the generosity of the weekend organisers.

Croeso Arberth had a stall at the Narberth Big Plant Sale at the end of April, which raised over £400 for the group.
